Blue Vedder Returns with New Single "Freaking Out" A Fresh Chapter in Dream-Pop Evolution

Naarm's (Melbourne) shoe-gaze and dream-pop luminaries, Blue Vedder, are back in the spotlight with their brand-new single, "Freaking Out". Marking their first release of 2024, the track showcases the band's distinctive blend of ethereal soundscapes and rock-infused energy, capturing a delicate balance between light and shade. The song's soaring chorus and intricate guitar work are paired with a visually striking music video directed by Melbourne filmmaker Bryce TM, further enhancing the emotional depth of the track.
"Freaking Out" has long been a fan favourite at Blue Vedder's live shows, and the band has taken their time in the studio to refine and perfect it.
"It’s a song about feeling frustration and confusion, someone who might be struggling to grasp reality again. We spent a lot of time crafting the song and trying to express the emotion I was feeling at the time."
The result is a track that stays true to Blue Vedder's roots in shoe-gaze and dream-pop while incorporating a more robust rock influence, drawing inspiration from artists like Wolf Alice, Radiohead, and Ride.

Blue Vedder's return follows a highly successful end to 2023, where the band played standout sets at the Yours & Owls Festival and the Ballarat leg of Spilt Milk. Their previous single, "Leather", made waves upon its release, debuting on Triple J Unearthed and quickly earning rotation. The track also received airplay on Triple J's Home & Hosed and garnered attention from notable outlets such as Frankie Magazine, The AU Review, Happy Mag, and Beat.
The momentum continued with a packed hometown launch show at Melbourne’s Bergy Bandroom, solidifying Blue Vedder's status as one of the most exciting acts in Australia’s alternative rock and shoe-gaze scene. Since bursting onto the scene with their debut EP 'Static', Blue Vedder has enjoyed a steady rise, winning a Triple J Unearthed competition in 2022 and moving from intimate venues to major festival stages across the country.
"Leather", produced in collaboration with Joe Agius (RINSE, Hatchie), saw the band exploring new sonic territories, blending their core sound with elements of pop and kraut-rock. This evolution in their music has been mirrored by an enhanced live show, featuring unique audiovisual elements that invite fans into the immersive world of Blue Vedder.
With "Freaking Out", Blue Vedder continues to push boundaries and evolve their sound, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead. As they prepare to release more music and take the stage at upcoming shows, the band is poised to make a significant impact on the Australian music scene in 2024.
