Founded by Dale Mamo (guitar and vocals), Johnny Foti (drums and backing vocals), Scott Gulbis (bass), and Adam Buttigieg (guitar and backing vocals), Kandalini has evolved from high school jam sessions to a band that now stands tall in the competitive Melbourne music landscape. Their sound, a unique fusion of punk, surf rock, indie, grunge, and garage, has been shaped by years of performing and a passion for pushing genre boundaries. Fans can hear echoes of classic punk energy, the introspective grit of grunge, and an indie-rock sensibility that melds each influence into a sound uniquely Kandalini.

The EP reflects not only musical maturity but also personal growth, as the tracks were inspired by life’s many upheavals and changes. From romantic struggles to profound losses and philosophical shifts, Kandalini’s music channels deeply personal experiences into powerful rock anthems.

“These are songs we’ve wanted to get out into the world for some time, they’ve lived on through massive changes in our personal lives... and somehow managed to see their way onto our debut EP.”

The result is an emotional depth that resonates with listeners who value music that confronts the highs and lows of life.

This EP offers everything from catchy pop-punk to epic seven minute rock ballads, creating a listening experience that’s as eclectic as it is cohesive. Mamo explains that a sense of suburban disillusionment is woven throughout the album’s lyrics, offering glimpses into the struggles and realities of life on the city’s edges. The band channels this dissatisfaction into gritty, rebellious tracks that connect deeply with fans. Each song unfolds a new layer, from introspective grunge to high energy anthems, making the EP a rich, immersive experience.

Recorded at Hothouse Audio in St. Kilda, the EP was a labor of love for the band. Dale Mamo took on production duties, while industry veterans Jez Giddings handled the mixing and Joe Carra mastered the EP at Crystal Mastering. Kandalini’s dedication to quality has earned them high praise from respected figures in the Australian music industry.

Tom Lyngcoln from The Nation Blue, Harmony described the band as

“Full tilt riffers”

while Raul Sanchez from Magic Dirt, River of Snakes called the EP

“a rollicking, rockin’ good time... filled with sick riffs, big drums, riveting dynamics, and smart arrangements.”

Kandalini’s influences are as diverse as the band members themselves.

“We aren’t a very unified band when it comes to influences...we each bring a part of our own distinct world into the band and chip away at that”

This blend of distinct tastes and backgrounds is one of Kandalini’s strengths, resulting in a sound that blends late 80s and 90s grunge, punk, and post-hardcore. This diversity breathes authenticity into their music, a quality that sets them apart from other acts in the crowded rock genre.

With their debut EP, Kandalini signals a strong intent to establish themselves within the rock genre. Their songs are now available on Spotify, Tidal, and other major platforms, making it easy for listeners worldwide to experience their distinct blend of punk attitude, grunge introspection, and melodic energy.
