Nick Keogh Releases Heartfelt New Ballad “Messina”
In the wake of a sold-out launch at Northcote Social Club, Naarm (Melbourne) based indie folk artist Nick Keogh has unveiled his latest single, "Messina". Known for his unique blend of sharp wit and emotive storytelling, Keogh’s new track is a departure into raw vulnerability, capturing the delicate, often playful nature of love with genuine warmth and introspection.
With a foundation of waltzing acoustics and tenderly delivered vocals, "Messina" draws listeners into the nuanced moments that make a relationship unforgettable. From long drives through countryside landscapes to lighthearted mishaps like getting a tongue stuck on an icy pole, Keogh’s lyrics capture both the whimsy and authenticity of being in love. The track’s gentle progression builds to a powerful third act, where Keogh’s emotions burst forth, creating a cathartic, relatable experience for listeners.
“This song is really special to me, I don’t usually write a lot of love songs. I find it hard to take myself too seriously and be earnest, but with this song, I tried blending the silly-goofy parts of being in love with the sincere and honest parts of being in a relationship.”
Keogh’s playful yet earnest approach lets him balance humour and sentiment in a way that resonates deeply, leaving listeners with a feeling of connection and honesty.
Recorded and produced with James Seymour at Melrose Place in Melbourne, "Messina" showcases Keogh’s ability to transform personal anecdotes into lyrics that feel both intimate and universally relatable. One particularly memorable moment in the song came from a trip to his cousin's wedding.
“My partner, who is vegan, was excited to see all the sheep but didn’t know why they were all standing around this big factory. She genuinely wanted to know where they were going, so I said they were on their way to Coles.”The song closes on the repeated line“trust me, I’m trying”
a humbling acknowledgment of imperfection and the effort required to grow in love. This honest refrain, paired with stirring instrumental swells, makes for a satisfying close to a song that is as heartfelt as it is genuine.
"Messina" marks an exciting evolution in Nick Keogh’s sound, building on the musical foundation he established with his EP "20 & Bored" and popular single "Ketamine". Known for his clever lyrics and energetic performances, Keogh’s work has earned high praise from music critics.
“Your sweet, effortless voice perfectly delivers each and every clever, catchy word”
Abby Butler from Triple J remarked on "Ketamine", calling it
“some of the best songwriting I've heard in a really long time.”
Keogh’s recent ventures include touring with indie and punk rock acts like Ruby Fields and Suzi, which has helped him hone his distinctive style and expand his sonic landscape.
His recent single "Always Knew" demonstrated his ability to layer complex themes with inviting melodies, setting the stage for "Messina" to take audiences on a heartfelt journey.
