Pop-Punk Chaos in Hobart: Jackson Simpson Reviews '1800-PAINLESS' Tour

Altar hosted a pop punk frenzy on August 17, with Teenage Joans, Between You & Me and Offset Vision hitting the stage to deliver an onslaught of emo tunes on a Saturday night.

Kicking off the night, Offset Vision brought their blend of melodic hardcore and emo to the stage. As the local openers, it was a hometown show, and they did not disappoint. Their raw energy and tight musicianship quickly won over the crowd, setting the bar high for the acts to follow.

As the crowd rolled in, the band surfed through their discography with ease, tracks such as “Dissociate” and “Upside Down” were particularly loved by the crowd. The combination of heavy riffs and heartfelt lyrics created a powerful start to the evening, leaving those in attendance ready for more.

Following Offset Vision, Between You & Me hit the stage and cranked the energy up a notch. The Melbourne-based band, known for their infectious pop-punk sound, delivered a set full of anthemic choruses and high-energy performances. It was the band’s first time in their 10-year career that they’d played in Tasmania, and it was clear that the band was there to give Hobart a night to remember.

Vocalist Jake Wilson’s charisma was on full display, as he led the crowd through sing-along moments in tracks like “Go To Hell” and “Nevermind.” The band’s musicianship was tight, with Chris Vernon’s guitar work providing the perfect backdrop for Wilson’s vocals. The set was a mix of new material from their album Armageddon and older fan favourites, ensuring that there was something for everyone.

As Between You & Me busted out their last tune they invited the crowd onto the stage, and threw a party to top off their already lively set. The Tasmanian crowd were left hoping and praying that it wouldn’t be 10 years until we see them again.

As the headliners, Teenage Joans delivered a performance that solidified their status as one of the most exciting acts in Australia’s music scene. The Adelaide duo’s set was a perfect blend of fun, raw emotion, and powerful pop-punk anthems that had the entire venue captivated from start to finish.

Teenage Joans immediately connected with the crowd. Cahli Blakers’ guitar work and vocals were spot-on, while Tahlia Borg’s drumming drove the songs with relentless energy.

Highlights of their set included the poignant “Something About Being Sixteen” and the anthemic “Candy Apple,” both of which had the crowd singing along at full volume. Teenage Joans brought authenticity and emotional depth to their performance, which resonated deeply with the audience and made for a truly special night.

As the night ended, Between You & Me joined Teenage Joans on stage for a performance of 1800-Painless, which had the crowd moving and topped off what was an excellent night of emo tunes.
