UK Alt-Rock Icons bôa Return with 'Whiplash', Their First Album in Over 20 Years, Following TikTok Fueled Resurgence
UK alt-rock trio bôa is set to make a triumphant return with their first album in over 20 years, "Whiplash", aiming for release on October 18, 2024. Produced by Chris Zane (Jack Antonoff, Passion Pit), the album represents a highly anticipated moment for long time fans and newcomers alike. Following a resurgence in popularity, largely due to TikTok reigniting interest in their 1998 cult classic "Duvet" the band has re-entered the spotlight with renewed energy and passion.
With over 1 billion streams across their catalog, the alt-rock trio decided it was time to return to the studio and offer new music. Their comeback began with the singles “Walk With Me”, “Beautiful & Broken”, and “Worry”, all of which have received critical praise. As Brooklyn Vegan noted
"’Walk With Me’ is cut from the same jangly ’90s alt-rock cloth as their classic material"
But its relevance in today’s music scene is undeniable. FLOOD described "Beautiful & Broken" as a track that showcases the band’s talent for orchestral flourishes, with Jasmine Rodgers wrestling with deep, personal themes in the lyrics.
bôa's timeless appeal stems from their ability to bridge generations. "Duvet", their most iconic track, has gathered nearly 300,000 video uses on TikTok and over 688 million streams on Spotify. Described as “nostalgic and tender” by Variety, the song’s guitar-pop sound continues to enchant new listeners. This resurgence inspired bôa to reunite and craft "Whiplash" , an album that delves into themes of pain, solitude, and triumph, transcending any generational divide.
Vocalist and guitarist Jasmine Rodgers reflects on the emotional journey that inspired much of "Whiplash".
"From the first moment in the rehearsal room, we were writing again"
The writing process coincided with significant personal events for Jasmine, who experienced a breakup during this period.
"Some of the lyrics relate to that, some look at things I’m passionate about, the way I look at the world, how even now I don’t fit in"
She continues, expressing that the title track is open to interpretation. It could be about personal breakups or the collective "crazy ride" the band has been on.
The title of the album reflects both personal and societal unrest, and the music mirrors that sense of movement and chaos. The band’s characteristic guitar-led sound, hypnotic riffs, and introspective lyrics shine through in "Whiplash", and fans of their earlier work will appreciate the warmth and depth they’ve always brought to their music.
In support of the album, bôa has sold out their first-ever North American headline tour, beginning September 11, 2024, with stops in major cities like Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and Chicago. Rocket and Sea Lemon will provide support during the North American leg of the tour. The band will then return to the UK and Europe for another round of sold out shows starting on October 17, just a day before the album drops.
