Inertia's 'Emerald Whisper' Tour Brings Controlled Chaos to Hobart's Altar Bar

Friday, July 31 saw Inertia bring their 'Emerald Whisper' Tour to Altar Bar in Hobart, delivering a night that showcased just how healthy Tasmania's heavy music scene has become.

Opening the evening was local outfit Ubiquitous. The band have been working on their craft since high school across a range of different projects, and Friday's show carried extra significance as it coincided with the release of their new EP, 'Inertial Frames'. 

Their sound sits somewhere between crushing heaviness and dreamlike atmosphere, producing dank, deep bass lines and thunderous breakdowns without sacrificing melody. They brought an infectious energy to the room, making their hometown slot feel entirely deserved.

Next came Tranquility Unknown. Not my first time seeing these guys, and it definitely won't be my last. They just keep getting better.

Hailing from Tasmania's North West Coast, the band have steadily become one of the state's premier heavy acts, earning support slots alongside Northlane and festival appearances through sheer force of performance. Every member owns their section of the stage with absolute fury. Their music is beautifully haunting, blood heavy, emotionally charged and completely addictive.

Sydney five piece Irken Armada kept the momentum rolling. Touring nationally alongside Inertia throughout July and August, the band delivered one of the night's most relentless performances. Each member stands their ground with confidence, locking into a wall of aggression that grabs hold of the room from the first note.

Their lyrics feel personal rather than manufactured, technical without losing their emotional weight. Combined with an enormous wall of sound, Irken Armada prove they're masters of the scene. Like Tranquility Unknown before them, they're a band that feels ready for a headline tour of their own.

By the time Inertia took the stage, the walls of Altar Bar were dripping almost as much as the flailing bodies in the mosh pit. The venue was packed shoulder to shoulder, the atmosphere electric before a single note had even been played.

Inertia possess an ethereal heaviness that's difficult to replicate. Their music hits somewhere between your bones and your soul, fusing mesmerising guitar work with deep, bottom heavy rhythms to create an atmosphere that's as enchanting as it is crushing.

From the opening beat, the audience was completely hooked. The set flowed effortlessly between fan favourites like 'Leviathan' and the band's latest single, and namesake of the tour 'Emerald Whisper'.

Sebastian Schaber on drums and Oliver Smith on bass provide the clean, low end foundation that drives the band's unmistakable breakdowns, while guitarist Mark Williamson layers razor sharp riffs into something cinematic and meticulously polished. His playing is aggressive and abrasive, yet there's unique identity to his sound.

At the centre of it all is vocalist Julian Latouche. One moment his voice is soulful and controlled, the next it descends into a gut wrenching growl with astonishing ease.

Few bands manage to sound this polished while still feeling this visceral. Inertia's live show captures both. It's intense, captivating and emotionally charged from beginning to end, cementing 'Emerald Whisper' as more than just the title of a tour.
